ELROD
CEMETERY
Burgess Falls Road - Highway 135
Sparta - White County, Tennessee
Established circa 1838 on land granted the Howell-Elrod family for service in the American Revolution, Elrod Cemetery memorializes some of Tennessee's earliest pioneers and patriots. Veterans of every American conflict lie among the cedars, dogwoods and maples of this hallowed ground. They are joined by school teachers, mothers, farmers, nurses, preachers, and potters in this clay once held sacred by the Cherokee and other ancestral peoples.
We remember them. Even as we lay our own loved ones to rest in this soil, we are reminded of the distinctly American legacy that is our own heritage. Some celebrated in stories grander than life; others known only to the mountain breezes and simple ways that make for good living.
And so we gather to remember; to repair; to move ever onward ...to learn from the land and the people gone before us ...to stand, shoulders squared by heritage and assured by values as we live our own lives on this land ... and in our own time and way, add something to the story of this place.
